HarborOne Credit Union and Signature Healthcare's Radiation Therapy Department joined together to provide a full day of relaxation and educational workshops to ten area women who are in treatment for breast cancer or are breast cancer survivors. The women were transported by limousine to a secluded healing and wellness retreat center on the South Shore, where
they enjoyed the benefits of massage, yoga, stretching and dance. A certified nutritionist provided healthy eating tips, and other workshops addressed stress management (coping skills), physical fitness, and other topics designed to help the attendees experience peace and balance in their lives.
The program has been helping cancer survivors and others for three years. This is the second year that HarborOne has provided support, and the first year for Signature Healthcare. In addition, all of the women received their treatment at Signature Healthcare’s Radiation Therapy Center. The Healing and Wellness Retreat Center has been called “a sacred space for women” by one of the past participants. “I feel like I have been given a gift.”
According to program organizers, there are several goals. One is to provide a day where cancer patients can forget about chemo, radiation, or other treatments and tap into the positive energy of the Center. This enhances a sense of well-being and strength the women can carry with them through their future struggles. Additionally, the workshops are intended to teach healthy eating and making time for oneself, so they will be stronger and better able to handle the stress of their lives. An added benefit is the support they feel from the staff as well as the other participants, with whom they often develop close bonds as a result of their shared experience.
“We honor the people who are committed on a daily basis to helping women affected by cancer,” said James W. Blake, President and CEO of HarborOne. “We are proud to support this important program and appreciate the partnership of Signature Healthcare in making this a reality.”
